Review: The Eighth Guardian

Loved this! Fantastic start to a new series for me. Doing a happy dance. Spies? Check. Time travel? Check. Stubborn, flawed heroine? Check. Good stuff.

Amanda, code name Iris, goes to a kick-ass spy training school. Color me jealous, because I SO want to go there. She's recruited early to a top secret branch of the government. And get this: they time travel. Remember the short-lived show from the 80s, Voyagers? I feel like the author and I are the only two people who watched it, because it is like Phineas Bogg and Jeffrey were the grandfathers of this program.

Did I mention that I loved it? Because I did. Subtracted a star because Abe annoyed me and I'm not sure how the next book will continue on without hitting the reset button somehow. But hey, it's time travel so anything is possible.

Review: The Secret of Chimneys

The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha Christie

Another great mystery from my girl Agatha. This one introduces us to Superintendent Battle, a level-headed bloke who isn't easily fooled. I like him quite a bit. You know who else I like? Anthony Cade, good-hearted free-spirit, traveling the globe and helping out damsels in distress. He's great.

You get some great Christie twists in this one. She really was the best. Sit back and enjoy the ride, because she will fool you at every turn, and you get a satisfying ending, as usual. 4 stars

Review: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm of two-minds about this book. I mean, it's time travel / reincarnation. I like that. Part spy thriller, part historical fiction, part mystery. All sci-fi. But the pace! Way too little happens for a book that spans lifetimes. If you go in with managed expectations, you should enjoy the ride.

But an interesting premise and I loved the ending. The ending saved it for me. Three stars.

Review: The Peril and the Prince

The Peril and the Prince by Barbara Cartland

Dame Barbara veers off of her typical path and adds some spy intrigue to her game. You go, girl!

Now, since it's my old friend Barbara you still get the heroine with the stilted, ridiculous speech and fluttering eyelids. The woman can't write any other way. And the love interest is bossy and overbearing, but makes our heroine's virgin heart go pitter-pat regardless. We get the exotic settings of castles and trains in Hungary and Russia, and some undercover spy work that will never be confused with James Bond, but is still fun.

Barbara cranked them out and I keep reading them. I have no one to blame but myself. 2 1/2 stars.

The Spy Lover

The Spy Lover by Kiana Davenport

The Civil War is one of my favorite times to read about in history, and I thought I would fall in love with this book. Looks like we will just be friends.

We get to see the Civil War through two Chinese-American's eyes: Johnny and his daughter Era. Both are caught in the middle of the war between the North and South, and both are struggling to survive a fight that isn't necessarily theirs. Their perspectives are very different and the war shapes them in very different ways. There are no real winners in a war, and everyone has a less than happy ending. Just like real life.

I have to confess the author almost lost me during a scene full of pit vipers. I. Hate. Snakes. I was listening to the audio and nearly wrecked my car. It was truly awful. No thank you. More terrifying than any horror novel, hands down.

Decent historical fiction, and interesting characters. I loved Johnny Tom. 3 stars.

Set in a prestigious private school in England, Poirot is summoned by a student to solve the crimes. Murder is afoot. Not just one murder, but two. Who will be next? Well, besides our good friend Hercule Poirot, no one is safe. But not to worry, because he always gets his man. Or woman, as the case may be.

The Clocks (Hercule Poirot #34)

Another Christie classic. This one takes us into the intriguing spy games of the 1960s.

A murdered man. A blind woman. A young secretary. And 4 mysterious clocks left behind. How do they all fit together? Leave to the masterful Agatha Christie to weave a plot that leaves you guessing, but makes sense in the end. Our old friend Hercule Poirot is there, twirling his mustaches and drinking hot chocolates. He is pompous, but I love him for some unexplainable reason. And Colin, marine biologist / investigator, is a likable character--wish he was around for more.

Poirot may be old, but the guy is still at the top of his game. #34 in the series, and still enjoyable.
